Picking your wedding photographer is a little like dating. You’re not just looking for good looks (in this case, pretty pictures), you’re searching for someone you click with. Someone who gets you, who makes you feel comfortable, who’s there when it matters most and has your back when things don’t go quite to plan. After all, this isn’t just any vendor; this is the person who’ll be right there as you’re stepping into your dress, saying your vows, and tearing up the dancefloor in the evening.
So what are the questions to ask your wedding photographer before you book? Think of this list as your little black book of insider questions. The ones that go beyond the Instagram highlights and give you a real feel for how they’ll handle your story from start to finish.

1. What’s Your Vibe Behind the Camera?
Every photographer sprinkles their own kind of magic on a wedding day. Some slip into the background like a shadow, quietly catching the moments you didn’t even know were happening. Others step in with a little gentle direction when you need it most. There are the ones who’ll happily help you keep the day on track, and the ones who wouldn’t dream of interfering. Some arrive with big, bold energy, the kind you can’t miss, while others feel more like that effortlessly cool friend who just happens to have a camera in hand. The real question is: which kind of energy feels right for your day?
2. Can We See a Full Wedding Gallery?
Instagram feeds, Facebook posts, TikToks, they’re the highlights reel, not the full story. Always ask to see an entire gallery from start to finish. It’s the best way to judge consistency in a photographer’s work, how they handle tricky lighting scenarios, from bright midday sun that casts harsh shadows to dimly lit reception spaces where every detail matters. It shows how they capture the rhythm of a whole day, not just the big “wow” moments. The full gallery shows you the complete story, exactly as it unfolded.

3. Do We Need a Shot List?
Spontaneous moments are pure magic, but every couple has those personal must-haves that tell their unique story, like your furry friend trotting down the aisle with the rings, or the secret embroidered message stitched into your suit jacket. Don’t assume we’ll automatically know these details; sharing them means nothing gets lost in the whirlwind of the day. You can trust us to capture the classics, walking down the aisle, the first kiss, the confetti throw, that’s a given. What really matters here are the little touches that are special to you, the ones that make your wedding yours.
4. How Much Time Should We Allow for Key Photos?
Couple portraits, group shots, confetti moments… they all need a bit of time. A great photographer will work with your timeline so everything feels relaxed, not rushed. They’ll also be able to advise how long they typically need, so your schedule flows effortlessly.

5. What Time Should We Be Ready By?
This is one of those questions I wish couples asked more often. I always recommend being fully ready at least 30 minutes before you’re due to leave. That way, you’ve got time to breathe, grab a glass of fizz, take it all in, and capture some of my favourite images. The ones that show the excitement, the nerves, and the anticipation, all wrapped up in the glow of the morning.
6. What Happens If Things Run Late?
Spoiler: weddings rarely stick to the exact minute. Ask your photographer how they handle it when timings slip. Can they roll with it and still get all the important shots? Flexibility is everything here.

7. Should We Feed You?
It might sound small, but it’s actually huge. A wedding day is long, and a well-fed photographer is a happy one. Most of us don’t expect a seat at your top table, but a hot meal (many venues offer specific vendor meals) helps us recharge and keep going strong right through the dancefloor antics. It’s also worth remembering that many wedding venues are in remote locations, so popping out to grab something just isn’t an option. And because of Health & Safety and hygiene protocols, we can’t rely on kitchen facilities to store or heat food we’ve brought with us. A proper meal provided on-site keeps us fuelled, focused, and ready to capture every moment without missing a beat.
8. What If You Can’t Make It?
Weddings are once-in-a-lifetime, so a Plan B is essential. If the unthinkable happens, what’s their emergency plan? A trusted backup photographer? A network of peers ready to step in? It’s good to know that come rain, shine, or unforeseen hiccup, your day will still be beautifully captured.

9. What’s the Backup Plan for Our Memories?
Tech is amazing… until it isn’t. You want to know your wedding photos are safe from rogue hard drives or laptop meltdowns. Ask your photographer how they back up images so you can sleep easy knowing your memories are protected.
10. How Long Do You Keep Our Images?
Life happens, laptops crash, and USBs mysteriously vanish. Knowing your photographer has a long-term plan for storage (and how long they’ll keep your images backed up) means peace of mind, even years after the big day.

11. How Quickly Will We See Our Photos?
The buzz after your wedding is undeniable; you’ll be desperate to relive it all straight away. Some photographers send a handful of previews within days (a little teaser to keep the magic alive), while others don’t offer previews at all. Full galleries can land in your inbox within a few weeks, or in some cases, take up to 12. Every photographer works differently, so it’s worth asking not just about their usual turnaround, but also whether a packed schedule could slow things down. That way, you’ll know exactly when to expect your memories to arrive.
12. What’s Your Social Media Policy?
Some couples love their photos being shared, others prefer privacy. Talk about whether you’re happy for your images to appear on Instagram or if you’d like things kept just for you. No surprises, just clarity.

Your wedding photographer isn’t just someone you hire; they’re someone you invite into the most personal moments of your day. You want to know their style, their process, their quirks, and how they’ll handle life’s little surprises.
Because when the music fades, the flowers wilt, and the champagne glasses are empty, it’s the photos that will carry you back. To the kiss that made your knees buckle, the laugh that made your sides ache, the moment you looked around and thought: this is it. And if you’ve chosen the right photographer, those memories will be just as vivid years from now as they were on the day you said “I do.”
