So, you’re engaged—congrats! You’ve got the ring, the Pinterest board is overflowing, and your group chats are buzzing with venue options and dress inspo. But before you dive headfirst into wedding planning chaos, let me—your friendly wedding photographer—offer some words of wisdom. After all, I see more weddings than most people attend in a lifetime, and I’ve picked up a few (hundred) tips along the way. From sun-drenched summer soirées to cosy winter celebrations, no two weddings are ever the same, but one thing remains constant—how the flow of the day shapes the experience.
Ever been to a summer wedding where guests vanish outside after dinner, leaving the band playing to an empty dancefloor? Or a winter wedding where the light fades faster than expected, meaning those dreamy golden-hour portraits never quite happen? These little details can make all the difference in how your day feels. This is just Part 1 of my wedding planning tips, dedicated to creating a smooth timeline and making your wedding run as smoothly as possible—because the last thing you need is to be checking your watch when you should be sipping champagne. Stay tuned for more insider tricks to help you plan a wedding day that flows effortlessly!
Buffer Time – Why you need more time than you think
When it comes to planning a wedding that feels effortless and relaxed, timing is everything. Start with your ceremony time and work your schedule backwards and forwards from there to make sure the day flows like a dream. And whatever you do, don’t just guess how long things will take—ask the experts. Your florist, hair stylist, caterer… they do this all the time and can give you a realistic idea of what’s needed. And here’s my golden rule: always build in a little extra buffer time. Things will take longer than you think, and having a cushion means a small delay won’t send the whole day into a tailspin.
One thing couples often overlook? The gap between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast. You want at least two hours here—yes, really. It might sound like a lot, but trust me, you’ll be using every minute. There’s the confetti throw, guests queuing up to hug you, formal group shots, couple portraits, and even capturing those dreamy reception setup photos. Plus, you’ll want time to actually enjoy chatting with your guests before you’re ushered in for dinner. If you’re unsure about timings, don’t panic—your wedding planner (if you have one) and me (your trusty photographer) have got you. I’m there all day and can help guide you, but checking in with your other suppliers will make sure everything runs like clockwork.

Daylight Matters: Plan for Sunset
When planning your wedding timeline, don’t forget to factor in when you’re getting married—because daylight hours matter. Summer weddings give you up to 16 glorious hours of light to play with, while winter weddings? More like seven. And here’s the thing—sunset isn’t flexible, but your ceremony time is. If you’re dreaming of natural daylight wedding portraits in the winter months, you’ll want to start earlier than you would for a summer wedding. Trust me, nothing kills the mood faster than realizing your perfectly planned post-ceremony portraits now have to be done in the dark. Plan smart, make the most of the daylight, and if golden hour shots are on your wishlist, you can make sure there’s time before you head into the wedding breakfast and the day turns to night.

Golden Hour & Tides: Time It Right!
If you’ve been dreaming of golden hour wedding portraits bathed in that soft, romantic glow or epic beach shots with the waves lapping at your feet, then listen up—because sunset and the tide wait for no one. These are not flexible times, so when planning your timeline, make sure you know exactly when the sun sets and when high tide is. That way, you can carve out the time you need for these photos rather than scrambling on the day, only to realise the best moment clashes with your wedding breakfast or first dance. As someone who’s navigated countless weddings, I know how to make these things happen seamlessly—so ask your photographer in advance! We can help you slot in the perfect little window of time so you’re not sacrificing other key moments to make it work. Trust me, a little planning now means you’ll get those dream shots without the stress later.

Speeches: Timing Is Everything!
When it comes to my wedding planning tips for speeches, there are really only two sensible places to put them—either at the very beginning of the wedding breakfast or, even better, at the end. But whatever you do, never sandwich them between courses. Trust me, I’ve seen it done, and it’s a one-way ticket to chaos. Kicking off with speeches can be a great option for those who are nervous and just want to get it over with, but the downside? Hungry guests. There’s nothing like the sound of rumbling stomachs and side-eye glances at the kitchen door to kill the vibe.
And while I know the idea of sprinkling speeches between courses feels like you’re making more of an event out of the meal, in reality, it’s the biggest timeline-derailing, food-spoiling move you can make. It also robs your guests of the chance to properly chat, you of the chance to mingle, and—if you’re planning beach photos—that all-important window when the tide is just right. The best time? Hands down, at the end of the wedding breakfast, when guests are well-fed, well-lubricated, and at peak engagement, ready to laugh, cry, and toast your speakers properly. And if you must split your speeches, do it at the start and the end—but never, ever in the middle. Got it?

Cake-Cutting & Dancing: Get the Timing Perfect
When it comes to cutting the cake, timing is everything (yes, even for cake). If you’re planning on serving it as dessert, the best time to do the official cut is right at the beginning of the wedding breakfast. This gives your catering team enough time to whisk it away, slice it up, and have it beautifully plated for your guests by the time dessert rolls around. But if your cake is more for show (or a late-night snack), then the optimum time to cut it is about five minutes before the first dance. That way, your guests are only gathered up once, making for a smooth transition from cake-cutting excitement straight onto the dancefloor. And if neither of these options works for you? No problem! You can always sneak in a faux cake-cut photo with just me, your photographer, earlier in the day—no one will ever know, and you’ll still get that picture-perfect moment.

Empty Dancefloor? Move That Ceremony!
We’ve all been to that summer wedding. You know the one—where the wedding breakfast wraps up, the sun is still beaming, and guests are happily milling about outside, sipping drinks and soaking up the golden evening glow. Meanwhile, inside, the DJ or band is setting up, gearing up for the big party. Then suddenly, you’re called in for the cake cutting and first dance. You shuffle inside, watch the moment unfold… and then—poof!—everyone drifts straight back out into the sunshine, leaving an almost-empty dancefloor, aside from a couple of enthusiastic toddlers having the time of their lives. If you want to avoid the dreaded summer wedding empty dancefloor, here’s my top tip: move your ceremony time later. It won’t affect the rest of the day in the slightest, but it does mean that by the time your first dance rolls around, the sun will have dipped, it’ll be getting darker and cooler outside, and your guests will be far more likely to stick around and properly let loose under the glitterball. Because let’s be honest—no one can resist a dancefloor when the lights are low and the tunes are right.
